Telephone service that started out as linked, twisted, and insulated wires for voice communications have been replaced by advanced technology, such as VoIP phone systems. IP telephone technology called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP technology has opened new technological ways to work from your on computer and link voice and data communications. VoIP phone service utilizes your computers transmission methods to send voice communications that are offered at a low monthly access fee and includes free long distance calling and other features such as voicemails that are converted to text messages.

Traditionally, long distance service flowed over to “trunk lines” and a hefty charge was incurred to cover costs. Now unlimited long distance may be included in a reasonable flat fee as part of your VoIP phone service, utilizing your computer and even many mobile phone services offer nationwide long distance free of charge due to use of satellite signals.

Voice over Internet Protocol phone service uses a broadband Internet connection and IP phones to transmit conversations in data packets and convert them back to voice communications, coming through your computer or a telephone. IP telephone service offers free or lower cost connections using Wi-Fi hotspots and because it flows through your computer, includes free long distance access as well.

Mobile phones are capable of allowing you to browse the Internet and read emails and are a portable communication device. VoIP phone services flow voice communications through a computer and is similar to the satellite connectivity that has transformed many non-telephone electronic devices, into multi-tasking, hand-held telephone and data devices. Through VoIP technology, home telephone service may cease to exist in the form of landlines, as we know it today.

VoIP technology can be used in remote areas that have wireless access or hotspots to the Internet. Because it uses an IP address connection, all of your data and voice communications can be consolidated into one low monthly bill that saves you the long distance charges. Many VOIP Phone service plans have also reduced international calling plans.

The cost savings of landline charges and long distances are the primary reason that many people are switching to VoIP phone services, due to it being far more affordable and reliable. As technology has advanced, there are ultra-portable laptops that use mobile broadband networks and VOIP phone service can be integrated in much the same way. VoIP is a way that communications of all kinds can utilize internet connections to transmit data packets of voice communications, photos or data.

As wireless internet hotspots become more popular and widespread, it is possible to get a VoIP phone service that utilizes these for coverage whether at home or away, through your IP address. New technology that takes advantage of these lower cost signals is becoming widespread through many products and services. The advantages of VoIP phone systems are many, but the cost savings can be dramatic, depending on the amount of long distance usage and line charges you have been incurring with traditional phone services.

One of the best and cheapest ways to talk to people today isn’t on a cell phone. A trend in many businesses is to utilize their existing Internet connections and use VoIP services like Cisco and Vonage to make their business calls. Doing so will save them big bucks if they can eliminate there need for a leased line for phone communications. Cell phones are limited in the areas they cover, and they typically cost more to operate than Internet VoIP aplications. To use your computer to make phone calls you will need VoIP software and a computer headset to allow you to talk over the Internet for free, if you buy a service such as Vonage you can make local and long distance calls for free. So, if you decide to go this route here are a few pointers when purchasing you new computer headset.

Don’t Buy the Cheapest

When purchasing a computer headset it is not wise to go for the cheap, ten-dollar version sold by the generic technology companies. These may function well enough to suit you, but after a while you will be disappointed with there quality. Most of the cheaper models are generally fairly uncomfortable and will only give you lackluster performance. Paying a little more for a good quality computer headset will dramatically increase the audio quality of both inbound and outbound voice calls. Headsets have been popular for use with computer games for a few years now, the recent trend in Internet gaming as helped boost the market. Bluetooth computer headsets have also been growing in popularity over the past few years in the business world to help increase mobility and productivity.

Computer Headsets for Business Use

Computer headsets are providing the necessary interface to the computer to allow business users to make all of their contact calls over the computer and utilizing the Internet to make the call for free. Headsets can also be used in the business world in places like call centers to cut down on the background noise of having so many employees on the phone at the same time in a small area. This allows for more private communication as well. Gone are the days of shelling out huge amounts of money every month for cell phone plans for each employee. By using the computer to make phone calls the only items you need to by is the VoIP software and a reliable headset for the user to wear. This setup will save you money in the long run compared today’s expense cell wireless carrier plans.

Computer Gaming Headsets

If you are into computer games for the Xbox, Playstation and Wii, the latest craze is to play against one another over the Internet. This allows users from all over the world to play against each other in a virtual space, the Internet. However, if you are going to stay competitive in this world of high tech gamers, you will definitely need at computer headset to connect to your Xbox or Playstation. These headsets are typically wireless, using Bluetooth technology. Of course if you are the traditional computer gamer, your computer headset will be plugged into your ultimate gaming PC and you’ll be playing something like Counter-Strike or World of Warcraft. If this is the case, you may want to go with a USB interface for your computer headset. This style will be directly wired to your PC and will not require you to replace the batteries. This style tends to be more comfortable and offers a much high audio quality than some of the cheaper wireless models available.

It is important to remember there are many different styles of headsets available and each with fit a little differently. If you are using the computer headset strictly for audio then you will need just the ear pieces, basically traditional headphones. But if you plan on using the headset to communicate for gaming of phone service you will need a headset with a mic in order to have two-way communication.

Just remember, cheaper is not always better especially in computer headsets. There is a big difference in quality between the low to mid grade as compared to the more pricier higher quality headsets. My advice is to get a mid level priced headset to start out and then if you find yourself using it more and more, you can later upgrade to a higher quality model.

If you are planning to take a trip overseas and want to know if your present cell phone will work, you will need to know the meaning of a variety of cell phone terms. Most of these definitions deal with cell phone networks and the types of phones that can be used with them.

One of the first terms that you may run across is AMPS, which stands for Advanced Mobile Phone Service. This type of cell phone service is what is known as 1st generation cell phone technology. While this type of system is no longer used in the United States, a small number of foreign countries still rely on AMPS for their mobile service (although major cities worldwide ceased its operation in 2000).

Simply put, AMPS was the first type of mobile service for cellular phones and was introduced in 1983 by Bell Labs. It was an analog- based system that uses separate frequencies for each individual conversation. Due to this feature, AMPS utilizes much more computer power in handling the rising number of cell phone calls.

There was also a higher occurrence of static and noise when using this operating system, and eavesdropping was possible with the use of a scanner. This eavesdropping can allow an unauthorized person to clone the Electronic Serial Number that defines each cellular phone for billing purposes and can place that information on a number of different cell phones while the owner of the original device pays the bills. Again, this system is no longer used in most countries around the world.

Many countries are now using CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access. This type of system is known as 2nd generation (2G) technology and is based on a digital standard. A CMDA system spreads the transmissions of a particular cell phone call across a wide number of frequencies by using an assigned code that is given to each user.

If a signal is described as being digital, it means that the sound waves, radio waves, and other data in a transmission are translated into a computer binary code, a language that the computers that are involved in making the cell phone call can easily understand. This method requires much less computer power than the AMPS systems, and the cell phone calls themselves are much sharper and clearer. A type of this 2nd generation mobile service is a Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), which is a European system that is widely used in many countries overseas.

Lastly, there is 3rd generation (3G) technology that is known as WCDMA, which stands for Wideband Code Division Multiple Access. This system uses wideband digital radio communications that allows the transmission the Internet, multimedia features, videos, and a variety of other applications that demand more computer capacity. Though these 3rd generation systems are fast becoming the systems of choice for many cell phone service providers in the Untied States, many foreign countries do not provide availability to them as of yet.

Knowing the terminology that describes cellular phone operations can help you to determine if your cell phone will function in another country. You can check with the cell phone providers that are located in the country that you are planning to visit or find any information that you may need via the Internet.

I do a lot of snooping around on question and answer sites like Yahoo Answers to find out what kind of questions people are asking about broadband phone service. Even with all of the advertising, and TV commercials, people seem to have heard of VoIP, but are still unsure of what exactly it is, and how or if it can benefit them. Most people understand VoIP’s potential for saving money on phone calls, but are unaware of the many different ways to use it.

What is VoIP?

The term VoIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol. Some pronounce it like a word, voyp, while others, including myself, pronounce it just like it’s spelled, Vee-oh-I-pee. VoIP is a protocol that converts voice signals into a digital format that can be transferred over the Internet. Keep in mind that VoIP is not a service. It is a means of converting voice signals to a usable format for relaying voice messages over the Internet. For all intents and purposes it is a technical term. I felt a need to clarify that since most people do believe it is a service. For any form of VoIP to work you need a broadband Internet connection like DSL or cable.

Using VoIP with a Client

To use VoIP with a computer you can use a free downloadable client, and either a headset with built in microphone, or computer speakers and microphone. Most people have heard of Skype, a very popular VoIP client that makes it possible to make free calls from your computer to other computers or Skype users. MSN or Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger do the same thing! When you’re using Yahoo and MSN to voice chat you are using VoIP. You can also use these services to make calls to cell phones, or landline phones, but normally for a fee. In general only computer calls are free.

While making calls using a VoIP client is either cheap or free, it does have its limitations, with the biggest one being not everyone has Skype, MSN, or Yahoo messenger. Your contacts have to be online for you to call them, or for them to call you. It is possible to get a phone number for your client so people can call you from their home telephone, or cell phone, but it is not free, and you will need to be at your computer to accept the call. Even if you have voicemail, or offline messages it is still going to cost something.

Using VoIP with Broadband Phone Service

You can use VoIP to make and receive phone calls all over the world the same way you would with a landline telephone. To do this you’ll need a broadband Internet connection like cable or DSL, a broadband phone service provider like Vonage or Packet8, and a broadband phone router that you can plug a normal telephone into, or a special broadband telephone.

When you use a router you can only plug one telephone into it. This creates a problem for people who need other phones connected to the line throughout the house. The solution to this is an expandable base broadband telephone. Expandable base broadband phones have the VoIP router built into the main phone, or base, and can connect to multiple wireless handsets throughout the home, eliminating the need for multiple outlets.

Replacing Your Landline with Broadband Phone

Often times you can keep your existing phone number when you switch to broadband phone. Many people use broadband telephone to replace their landline, but there are limitations here as well. If you lose power, or your Internet connection, you lose your phone service. 911 is also different from landline phone service since 911 over most broadband phone services call to the nearest emergency center, which may not even be in your area code. You also need to provide the information for your location via software or online account settings from your provider for 911 service to work. If you take your phone to another location, or move and forget to update your address, emergency services could possibly go to the wrong place when you call 911.

Benefits of Broadband Phone Service

Broadband phone service is much cheaper than traditional landline especially with unlimited calling plans. Unlike using a VoIP client, you get a real phone number, and use a real telephone for making and receiving your calls. Most broadband phone providers offer all of the calling features like call waiting, voicemail, or caller ID for free. Most landline companies charge a fee for these extra features, or you only get a few as part of your plan. Your phone can work from anywhere you have a broadband Internet connection. Yes, if you wanted to, you could take it with you.

There are a few enhanced features that are not available with other types of phone service, like virtual phone numbers. With virtual phone numbers you can get a phone number outside of your area code. One of the most common uses for this is getting a virtual number in an area code where a friend or family member lives. This way if they call you it is like a local phone call to them, and you’re not charged anything over your monthly fee for the virtual number, or your normal calling plan fees. I.e. If you have an unlimited calling plan you don’t get charged for the call if it’s within your calling region.

Call Quality

You can be online, and make a call at the same time; However, the quality of your phone calls over VoIP whether using a client, or broadband telephone can depend on a number of factors. Since you’re using your Internet connection for your calls, the speed of that connection can effect your call quality. Generally the higher your speed, the better call quality you’ll experience. If you’re using your Internet connection for other things while your on your call like uploads, or downloads, this can decrease your call quality. If you’re using a VoIP client, applications that take up a lot of system resources such as online games, or other media can also decrease your call quality. Factors such as wireless connections, or other people using the same Internet connection can also play a role.

Quality is more often effected when using a client vs a phone since with a client you’re actually using your computer and its resources. Generally broadband phone service phone calls are just as good if not better than traditional landline calls, but if you do experience an issue with quality, it may be one of the aforementioned scenarios, and is often easily corrected.

Availability

VoIP clients are available anywhere you have a computer, and broadband Internet connection. Broadband telephone service is available anywhere you have a broadband connection, but that doesn’t mean a phone number for your area is available from all providers. You can get a phone number for any area code covered by your provider regardless of where you live, so if you ever check availability, and your area code or town is not listed, try a surrounding local town that would normally be a local call, or just try a different provider to see if they have your area code.

Have you ever wondered how to block a phone call? Maybe you would like to block sales calls or those persistent telemarketers! Many phone companies are offering selective call acceptance, but those involve you making a list of your friends and family and then entering them into a “allow list” and all other calls will be blocked. This is often impractical because what if you got a job offer and since the caller is new, you will not get the call or the job.

So I checked into it and found out that no phone companies offer individual call blocking. Or at least no phone companies that I could find. I decided to try to find a way and found that indeed there is a way to block any phone number and actually much more can also be done besides just blocking.

There is software out there now that uses your computer modem to monitor the phone line. When it gets an incoming call it will announce the name of the caller through your computer speakers or house speakers if you have your computers sound connected to your home stereo system. It is completely customizable for how to hanle each individual phone number that comes in.

I tried all the software that I could and the best one that I found is called Ascendis caller ID. It is an amazing program that is loaded with cool features such as the ability to play a sound file when your best friend calls, announce in a male or female voice, and much more.

To use this type of software you need a modem that supports caller ID. At the Ascendis website they recommend a certain brand of modem for this because many modems claim to support caller ID but in practice they do not work. So take my advice and see what modem brand they recommend and save yourself the hassle of having to return a modem to your local computer supply shop.

Setting this all up is not too difficult. Just unplug your computers power source and open the case. Touch the metal frame of the computer casing with one hand while inserting the modem into an open PCI slot. This should be done this way to prevent static electricity from jumping from your fingertips to you motherboard which can ruin the board!

After installing the modem, put the case back together and Boot the machine up and load the modem drivers from the provided CD.

Now you simply plug your incoming phone line into the modems input and plug some phone line into the modems output and plug that cord into your phone. That’s it you are all set up to screen your phone calls the high tech way.

The only disadvantage to this is that your phones ringer will always ring once even if you are blocking that call. This is because the caller ID information comes in right after the second ring so the software cannot react until it gets this info. However, you can get around this by simply turning your phones ringer off and turning up your speakers that way the first thing you will hear is the voice speech announcer or whatever sound you have programmed in for that caller. It really is cool software and is free to try for thirty days. You can read more about it here: http://www.squidoo.com/how_to_block_a_phone_call
