You no longer have to avoid talking to friends and family abroad for fear of running up a huge phone bill. These days it is possible to make cheap international phone calls making it much more affordable for you to keep in touch. There are numerous ways to save money but in this article I’m going to tell you about making calls over the Internet and access number calling.

1. Save money by making calls over the internet

You’ve probably heard of Voice over Internet Protocol or VOIP and thought it sounded like something fresh out of Star Trek; in layman’s terms it’s simply a way to make calls using your Internet connection.

You don’t need a degree in rocket science to use this service, just a computer, an internet connection and a VOIP enabled headset or handset. You then simply sign up with a provider and install their software on your computer. From there any calls you make are routed via your Internet connection.

The cost of calls will vary depending on whether the person you are calling is also using their Internet connection, or whether you are actually calling their landline or cell phone.

Some companies will provide you with a device that can be plugged into your computer so that you can actually use your landline to make these low-cost calls.

2. Cut the cost of calls with access number calling

If you don’t have access to the Internet then you can cut call costs by dialling an access number. Decide on the provider you wish to use and after signing up they will provide you with a telephone number to call. Then when you wish to make international calls you simply dial that number, you will then be asked to input the number of the person you wish to call and your call will be routed through.

There is no special equipment or handset required; you simply use your home phone or even your cell. You pay the cost of calling the access number which is considerably cheaper than the cost of the international call through you phone provider.

Making calls over the Internet and using an access number to place your call are just two of the ways that you can save money on international phone calls and make it more affordable for you to keep in touch with your loved ones overseas.
